We are leaving, had enough.
I grew up here, and this ain't
the same town at all.
The rich pigs, with their
spandex wearing, 10 speed
riding buddies have taken over.
It's a shame that this beautiful
valley has fallen prey to the developers
,but it has.
So, the rich pigs can have it. I've had
enough. I hope they can't get any service when they run all the locals who actually work for a living off.
Adios.
PS. Gonna miss my friends, but many
of them are leaving, or have left too.
Welcome to Aspenboat.

I made that decision 4 years ago and happy I did…and Steamboat has gotten nothing but worse since. You couldn't pay me to live there now. Good luck in your new town.

Thanks vic.
At least I can afford a piece of land there, without selling my soul to the bank, like Steamboat has.

And how!!! Now that I am not paying thousands per month for a zipcode, I can actually afford to drive a new car and go on vacation. Not to mention, the people are much nicer. I guess they are not so stressed out paying thousands per month for a zipcode. And for the people who bought into Steamboat early and do not pay thousands per month…they still have to put up with the people who do. None of it is worth it to me…I have never been happier with a move.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Everyone's all stressed about money all the time.
I used to feel at home here. I almost feel like a stranger in this town, anymore. It isn't nice, people don't wave, smiles are forced, and you have to belong to some clique to count, or drive a $40,000 SUV that you have 15 yrs payments tacked on to your house loan that is quickly losing it's equity. I say, “nuke the clique”
This place is no longer small town charm, it's a giant money grab, by those that can borrow the most. Who owns this town? It's the banks. Reality is going to hit the fan soon.
And the average folk, like some of my buds in Dream Island, are looked down upon as trailer trash. People like Jim Cook just can't ever get enough money or mentions in the paper.
I hope they have to clean their own toilets. I'm really fed up with people who think life is centered around money. And I can tell you, the gas drillers are here, they just haven't shown themselves yet. Just wait till that gets hot an heavy.
I'm going to start a farm, for about what I have to pay for a years rent, in this town. And they just can't wait to build more.
Gotta keep Triple Clown happy. Gotta keep the yuppie's comfortable.
I try to keep a positive view, but it gets harder everyday. Time to go “off the grid” ;)

good luck to both of you..change is going to happen but Steamboat Springs is out of control..remember when we never wanted to be Aspen or Vail..well HELLO we are…it will be funny when these developers sell to the investors then the investors realize there are no working folk here anymore…thank Jim Cook and company(he isn't the only gulity one) were out too as soon as my child graduates from high school..a friend of mine said this and i think it sums it up.this usto be a community called Steamboat Springs..now its called Steamboat ..i do remember the friendly genuine smiles of people i would see in the stores or on the street and a friendly wave..now aint happening held the door for some folk the other day..they just walked through like they were entitled..so i said your welcome and they looked at me as if to say how dare you but i think one muttered under her breath thank you…it boils down to respect..there is none for those who do the entry level jobs..sorry for rambling..have a great Mem. Day weekend..be safe..God Bless

Jeez, I was just looking at my posts, seeing how negative I've become. Is it me? Maybe I'm looking at the glass half empty?
As I write this, a voice comes into my head and says, no, I'm looking at another place with the glass half full point of view.
Then I realize it. Steamboat has become too big for it's britches.
Ha, ha. Thank you God for giving me a sense of humor.
If we can't laugh at ourselves, who can we laugh at.
The old ranchers like the Hibbards, Looks, Telliers, Mays, etc, are just distant memories, and we have become what we once kinda thought was an oddity, one big giant dude ranch.
I guess I thought we had more roots than that.
Signing out. Stompin Steve. Luv ya.

yep paddle…that's what I did…waited for the last kid to graduate. There are 3 people on my street alone that did the same thing. We are all happy campers. I don't even like to go to Steamboat anymore for shopping, dinner, concerts…nothing. The traffic, the people…and the ridiculous prices. It used to be worth the extra price because it was such a nice community. Now it is definitely not worth the price or the hassle.
stomp - I bet your cup will be overflowing in your new town. It is no wonder you are feeling negative - Steamboat is filled with negative energy these days. It's the same old crap. People come to Steamboat, love the pristine quality and small town ambience…and because they hate the hustle bustle of where they live, move to Steamboat. Then they start changing it to exactly what they hated so much and just left. Makes no sense.

San Luis valley. Got 10 acres for 20,000. Water rights 30gpm, mineral rights, 1/2 mile from Rio Grande river, 1 mile from nearest neighbor, 12 miles from nearest town. Solar, Wind energy. Make woodgas, have wild horses on property, so going try to get a couple of pics I can sell.
Building house out of recycled lumber, and digging down for extra space and geothermal considerations. Going to dig little ponds all over the land, with a pathway, and use that for a rainwater capture system. Might end up drilling a well, but trying to avoid that.
Few chickens, sheep, etc. Grow all our own produce.
Good grief America, we waste sooo much energy when
we don't grow our own food. 5 gallon bucket will produce
alot of garlic, and it's fun!

So sorry to lose some of the locals that make Steamboat Springs what it is, or should I say what it was. I'm in DI for now but who knows what the future will bring. Saratoga, Wyo. looks good to me, sorta like SS in the 70's. My kids still want to be here so will hang on as long as possible. With the Cook purchase of DI who knows how long that will be. It has been a good run and I love all of the real people here.

I was pretty sure that Jim Cook is a little bit of a jerk, but he isn't destroying DI. The hotel is going to be replaced with a new one, nothing big, about the same size except taller. The current homes will be taken out and replaced, the residents will still be there, however who knows how long till it's replaced. I've only lived here since December 2006 though, came from Florida. I honestly <3 Steamboat in the summer, I really am not looking to move to a flat area because of all these recent tornadoes. 8 more people were killed today in Iowa and Minnesota from tornadoes.

stompk,
It is really pretty in the San Luis valley. You must be loving it. I'm from Northern NM so I am pretty familiar with the area.
Since almost all of my friends have left town (cashed out on their real estate, moved and now have more money to raise the kids), I'm out of the 'Boat in less than a year too to go to NP school. I hope to work somewhere rural so maybe I'll see you someday in that area. I would love to go back towards NM, it's always calling me anyway!
Are you close enough to Ski Rio for day trips? That is a fun, small place to ski when they have snow.

i was going to start a new thread but this seems to fit right in..today at 9am i was heading east bound on pine grove to cty mkt had my turn signal on(right) got to the stop light and noticed two cars heading west bound on pine grove with thier left turn signals on all of us turning onto centeral park drive..so i stop then turn right while the others are turning left.well jus about had an accident cause the left turn folk were turning into the right lane to get into the parking lot.well this no driving sob reads me the right act and i ask him if he wants to call the pd./.1 i have him for road rage 2 he made an illegal turn.he tells me to f off and then porceeds to speed thruogh a parking lot..this is the type of attitude now ..guess there are rules for steamboat(driving) and the theres everybody elses..please all be safe out there and watch out for each other..the way it used to be

Good luck to you Stompk.
I could say many of the things you are saying about Steamboat about this entire state. It's not what it once was but neither is the San Diego, Denver, Breck, NY for that matter.
I think people change more than the cities they complain about though.

just have to ask…
when did driving a car become a competition? gawd help me, i got inadvertantly stuck in the daily steamboat-craig rally the other afternoon. hope i never have to take my life in my hands (or anyone elses) like that again.
when did it become acceptable behavior to attempt to intimidate me into driving faster than the speed limit by riding my bumper tighter than a friggin' hemorrhoid? i refuse to buy into that philosophy and all you morons who do can kiss my boston-irish a**.
i can't wait to get to my new home town, where the term “entitleists” pertains more to a golf ball than the new attitude.

mtnkids—you just learning what everyone else knows? The state wastes a lot of money buying yellow paint. Those yellow lines on the highway don't mean anything either. If the cops would just get out there and start ticketing those idiots that think highways were built just for them, they would fill the coffers! Hey wait! Just got an idea! Let's add the fines for idiot driving to a fund to work on the highway between Craig and Steamboat! Four lane highway–here we come!

Whoops….I meant to say. I agree. Steamboat is a terrible place to live, work, play, raise a family. I hear things are great in Detroit, New York, DC and Dallas though. *sigh*

mtnkids, I reread the comments and can't figure out why you chose to get so nasty. granny's post to you was basically agreeing with you albeit with sarcasm, bfd gets a user name for one comment aimed at getting nasty with granny and you jump on the nastiness bandwagon using the same “entitlist”, hmmmm. You once said your father taught you that a man is only as good as his word, I am very sorry that he didn't have the time to teach you some manners, respect or integrity. Hopefully your attitude will change when you get to your “new home town”.
