On Maureen Smilkstein: Dogs threatening

Maureen,
Thanks for your letter once again highlighting this important issue. I too have been threatened by those vicious sheep dogs while hiking near Dumont and on the upper portion of Spring Creek near Dry Lake Campground. There is absolutely no excuse why Erik Taylor, who handles sheep grazing contracts for the Forest Service can't keep sheep away from these two of the most popular places for human activity in all of Routt NF, especially when it has been brought to his attention several times including the tragic and fatal attack on a pet dog last summer. With as large an area as Routt NF covers, there simply has to be some other places where they can put sheep during the summer. How can it be that the benefits to this one sheep rancher far out weigh the safety and enjoyment of many hundreds of other folks trying to recreate safely in these two areas of our NF? It simply does not make good sense.
Sadly enough, I am now forced to carry a pistol with me when I hike in these two poplular places in order to protect myself and my dog.

Let's see now…. With a sentence of 8 years, she could probably get out in 3 years with good behavior, which amounts to about $400,000 embezzled per year served, or $200,000 if she only got half of the proceeds. Looks like crime does pay handsomely in Routt County.

Unfortuately it will not kill beetles that are protected by tree bark, but what it will probably kill for the second year in the a row is all the fruit blosoms that would have otherwise developed into food for birds and bears in the fall.

Skateboarding in the middle of US hwy 40 is a crime; and so is failing to stop on command from officers and eluding police. I do not understand why he was not arrested on Friday night.

It's funny how so many young folks think that a business i.e. Ski Corp should operate at a loss for the benefit of the people, i.e. “locals”. There is a system of government like that. It's called communism, and it continues to fail all over the world. The only reason communist China is thriving is that it too has embraced capitalism, and suddenly it's economy has taken off.

I think that if we eliminated parking on Lincoln between 3rd and 11th and used that space to create a walking mall on each side of the street that business would boom downtown and become much more pleasant for pedestrians, which is why business would boom. People love to shop where there are wide coblestone walking areas, with places to sit and nicely decorated with trees and flower pots. I've seen this strategy work very well in other parts of the US and EU and think it would work well here.
That in itself would force people to shuttle from the SB parking lot, but would require a similar investiment in parking availability and shuttle service on the south side of town.

I guess I will never understand why those of us that seek to analyze, understand, and learn from tragedies for the benefit of the living will always be labled as non-sympathetic and non-sensitive; and why the secret PC police among us are always snearing at those that they believe don't fit their mold of total political correctness.
Who was it that said that political correctness is the art of being able to pick up the clean end of a dog turd?

It still amazes me that the inside of a home can be completely destroyed and the damage only amount to $15,000. These guys got off easy, as most criminals do in Routt County.

This sounds like that restaurant that is seeing less business, so they cut back on service, as well as the quality and quantity of food in order to cut costs. We all know what happens to that restaurant next.
What will our visitors think about Steamboat if Ski Corp does not have enough people to man the lifts and serve the visitors who are spending big money on a ski vacation? Duh. They go elsewhere next year, our reputation suffers and the situation spirals downward. Sure was a good thing that Ski Corp was bought out by a hedge fund that had a lot of money behind them.
